Do you want a job that gives back to the beauty in a community? Become a steward of the Urban Forest in an elite municipal Forestry Division! We are currently accepting applications for an Arborist I position. This position is a tree care specialist, which requires pruning, planting, removing, diagnosing, treating, and protecting the urban forest within City limits. It also requires climbing trees and working with ropes and safety harnesses to perform tree work. This position requires knowledge of tree species, the care and maintenance of trees and shrubs, operation of bucket trucks, and other mechanical and safety equipment. This position may occasionally perform weekend and evening work as necessary.
The ideal candidate must possess the following: obtain (within 6 months of hire) and maintain a valid Class A, B, C and D CDL license with an N endorsement; obtain (within 1 year of hire) and maintain a valid Wisconsin Pesticide Applicator certification and license (category 3); and obtain (within 1 year of hire) and maintain the ISA Certified Arborist credential. Basic computer skills are required. A High School Diploma or equivalent with three years of professional arboricultural experience (including climbing, pruning, etc.) is required. A Bachelor's Degree or Associate's Degree in Urban Forestry or related field is preferred, but not required. Candidates will be required to pass a climbing and written test for this position.

Position performs skilled Arboriculture tasks within City's Urban Forest, and operates associated equipment needed for such work.   Excellent public contact abilities, organizational skills, and computer proficiency required.
The Forestry Division is responsible for performing specialized skilled work in care and maintenance of trees, shrubs and other vegetation in parks, cemeteries, and other municipally owned property.  Employee is responsible for diagnosing and managing common tree diseases, and insect pest problems. Requires a good working knowledge of safe horticultural and arboricultural practices such as trimming, pruning, removal, planting, and treating tree health issues.  Must be able to work aloft comfortably, and in adverse conditions.  
Plant, transplant, prune, spray, cultivate, water and care for trees and shrubs under the authority of the City of Eau Claire.
Cut down and remove diseased, dead and hazardous trees.
Perform tree care work such as injections, bracing, bolting and cabling branches.
Inspect trees and shrubs for insects and disease pests.  Treat these problems with an appropriate spray and/or other kind of control.
Inspect trees and shrubs for hazardous conditions; apply the appropriate measures for abating the hazardous condition.
Utilize, maintain and adjust Division equipment, such as chain saws, edged tools, power tools, ropes and safety equipment.
Operate all other Division equipment, such as but not limited to, aerial bucket truck, boom truck, brush chippers, tractor/loader, stump router and watering truck and pickup trucks/winches.
Must be able to climb trees and work from heights in precarious positions to perform assigned tree work through the skilled use of ladders, ropes, knots, hooks, riggings, rope and saddle and/or aerial bucket device and other tools and equipment necessary to the performance of the job.
Maintains proficiency in the safe and effective use of an aerial bucket truck.
Respond to emergency situations for tree work on public properties. This includes storm emergencies during unscheduled work periods.
Utilize and maintain all safety equipment provided by the City of Eau Claire. Requires considerable knowledge of safety practices to be followed while doing all job requirements.
Serve as a lead person over subordinates with the ability to guide and lead the work of helpers.
Record work related information as instructed. Ability to maintain records as required, both written and computerized.
Follow written and oral instructions with a minimum of direct supervision
Basic efficiency in computer use required.
Maintain the physical stamina, strength, agility and ability to perform assigned tasks in all weather conditions. Must be able to lift logs, materials, and equipment.
Maintains prompt, predictable, and regular physical attendance.
Must be able to take direction and work well with others.
Must be able to concentrate and perform accurately.
Must be able to react to change productively and handle other tasks as assigned.
Must be able to back-up fellow co-workers.
Operates City equipment used for snow and ice control.
Supports cemetery operations through operation of cemetery equipment or the provision of heavy manual labor.

Operates all City light or heavy equipment as required.
Performs related duties as required.
High School diploma or equivalent education with three years of professional arboricultural experience that included climbing with rope and saddle, pruning, planting, surgery, pest control, removals and propagation required. Bachelor's Degree or Associate's Degree in Urban Forestry or related field preferred.
Ability to pass a written exam and climbing skills test.
Good knowledge of tree trimming, treatment and removal methods, techniques and practices.
Good knowledge of tree species and cultivars commonly used in Parks and on streets to include pertinent characteristics and culture.
Good knowledge of planting techniques and procedures.
Must obtain and maintain a valid commercial driver's license (class A, B, C, and D with an N endorsement) within six months of hire. 
Obtain and maintain a valid Wisconsin Pesticide Applicator Certification and License in category #3 or acquire this certification within one year of hire date. 
Obtain ISA Certified Arborist credential within 1 year of hire date, and maintain the certification.
Maintain other certifications, such as, First Aid, CPR and Electrical Hazard Awareness, as provided by the City.

Job consists of a combination of sitting, standing, walking, kneeling, crouching, balancing and driving. Must have ability for frequent handling/finger dexterity; ability to repetitively bend, stoop, lift, reach, twist and climb; and ability to work at heights (without discomfort).  There will be exposure to heat, cold, wet, and slippery conditions.   In addition, there will be exposure to dust, noise and chemicals. Work day/night under varied environmental conditions.  Lift on occasion 100 pounds, with frequent lifting/carrying/pulling of 50 pounds, and/or constant lifting of up to 20 pounds. This job is categorized as very heavy on the City of Eau Claire's job demand analysis.
