The mission of the Zoological Society of Milwaukee is to take part in conserving wildlife and endangered species, to educate people about the importance of wildlife and the environment, and to support the Milwaukee County Zoo.

The Zoological Society of Milwaukee was established in 1910 as an informal group of community leaders who bought animals and raised funds for the Zoo. Today it is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization with the mission to conserve, educate and support the Milwaukee County Zoo. The Society has 44 full-time and 10 part-time employees who manage daily operations and programs.

Throughout the year, the Zoological Society of Milwaukee's Education staff, with assistance from Zoo Pride volunteers, provides enriching animal science classes for children ages infant through 14, plus adults and families. Classes include animal information, hands-on learning and Zoo tours.  For schools, the Education Department provides a) at Zoo programs, b) Zoo to You classes brought by ZSM educators directly to schools, often with live animals; and c) self-guided Zoo tour materials that enhance teacher curriculum. Along with sharpening students' sensory and observation skills, animal programs and related materials help fulfill science standards set by the state of Wisconsin.
